Having one kidney and using MDMA
Having only one kidney doesn’t automatically mean you’re at greater risk when using MDMA (commonly known as XTC). The key factor is your kidney function: if it’s normal, the risks are similar to those for anyone else. However, if your kidney function is reduced, it’s important to lower your MDMA dose in advance.
MDMA is primarily broken down by the liver, but it can become dangerous for the kidneys in cases of overdose combined with overheating. This risk increases when MDMA is taken in high doses, or used in combination with other substances like speed, cocaine, or alcohol, and when there’s insufficient cooling—such as dancing for hours without breaks.
To reduce risks:
- Test your MDMA so you know exactly how much is in it.
- Stick to a safe dose: ideally no more than 1 to 1.5 mg of MDMA per kilogram of body weight.
- Drink water moderately: never more than one small glass per hour.
- Avoid overheating: take breaks, cool down, and don’t combine MDMA with other stimulants or alcohol.
By following these guidelines, you can help protect your kidney health and reduce the risk of serious complications.
